Quarantine Week 3 (April 6-10)
Creative Prompt: Create a "Mood Portrait". Download Adobe Photoshop for FREE (see pdf below for directions) or you can create this project by hand. You can trace or free-hand the outline of your profile silhouette if you do it by hand, then fill the outline with a landscape or city scape of a place you've been and maybe wish you could go to now (rather than be quarantined in your house). I chose a landscape from a backpacking trip I did with friends last year at Ross Lake. The video below explains the assignment and is a Photoshop tutorial of how to layer two images in a silhouette with a layer mask and layer blending.

Examples from Mrs. Newton, Mrs. Granberg and their students:
Week 1 (March 23-27)
Pick any household item and draw it focusing on showing a single light source and creating a sense of 3-d form with highlights and shadows. Include a cast shadow (the shadow the object casts on to the table or surface). Use a colored medium if possible using the technique you learned of using complementary colors to darken and neutralize shadow areas. Challenge yourself! Choose an object that is interesting to you. See my instructional video below for more explanation:
Semester Projects:
1. "You Design" one-day mini project - Due Fri, 1/31
Creative design of your choice! Show me 3 things about yourself literally or symbolically. Your choice of media. 12"x18"
2. 1-Point Perspective Names - Due Wed, 2/12
Practice: 8 boxes and 3 letters on printer paper in 1 point perspective. Get checked off before continuing.
On colored poster-board, fold in half, draw your name in one point perspective. Follow same steps as practice boxes. See directions in the power-point file below. Project should have: 1) Correct use of linear perspective, 2) Good craftsmanship (neatness), 3) Sharpie outlines, 4) Your choice how to fill or decorate your letters OR the background and leave the letters blank. If finished early students will practice 2 point perspective (also see power point below)

*2 point perspective- One day assignment:
Click the PDF below and view the first 3 pages only. On page two, watch the tutorial video. Next create 7-10 practice boxes like the example on page 3. Some of the boxes should overlap. If you finish early, add details like recessions and protrusions in the boxes like a building might have. Also add shading as if there is a light source.

Homework! Due: TBD
Have accessible in class on a computer (via email or flash drive): A GOOD photo of you, someone you know, or a celebrity. The photo must have ONE clear light source from the side of the face. The picture should be clear and have a high resolution. Approximately 1/4 of the face should be in shadow and 3/4 lit. If you take your own photo make sure the room is dark except for your one light source - either a lamp or a window.

Notice: To work on this project at home the use of a paper clip unbent works very well to scratch off the black on the paper.

10. Art Therapy Project
"Inner and Outer Self" art therapy project.
Trace your profile. Inside of the head/face you will represent your "inner self". This is your true self, how you really are deep down. People may or may not see this part of you. Outside of your head shape is your "outer self"- the part others see and how they perceive you. Be creative in how you depict each of these sides of you. The imagery can be symbolic or abstract, etc.
Your choice of media. 9 x 12 paper
